A special citizenship ceremony was held at the Hamilton Art Gallery this morning to welcome 40 new Canadians.
The ceremony kicked off with a roundtable discussion on what it means to be Canadian.
College student Yeshu Vasamsetty described it as a chance to succeed.
“For me it means that I get a whole new opportunity, I get the same respect as everybody in society, it’s just a great feeling.”
Vasamsetty, originally from India says that her family spent some time in the United States but that they have always felt more safe in Canada.
“I became who I am today because of the culture I saw and the people I met.”
Following the oath MP David Christopherson welcomed new citizens and urged them to help make Canada stronger.
“Part of that obligation is to do your jury duty when your called upon, get involved in civic issues so that you can vote and vote intelligently.”
Christopherson also encouraged the newly sworn in Canadians to not forget their culture but instead to celebrate it.
