Hamilton and Metrolinx have unveiled their first preliminary look at our new LRT.
As you can imagine it has generated both positive and negative reactions to the plan.
I have always said that this whole project is waste of time and money IF it is not connected seamlessly to a major transit hub like GO Transit.
No activist or politician ever considered this during the first phase of the project until Premier Wynne said, no connectivity, no money.
Then everyone spouted, ‘no problem’ as if that was their first stage plan the whole time.
Now we hear that the James St. A-line connecting to the GO is not even an LRT, but a glorified street car.
Street cars suck! Ask anyone who lives near a line in Toronto.
They are an inefficient way to transport people and slow vehicular traffic to a crawl.
That’s why most cities got rid of them decades ago.
An LRT avoids all that. That is the point of having LRT.
Why would you build a world class transit system then ‘cheap out’ and ‘street car’ the small section that connects the city to the rest of the world?
That’s like sailing the St Lawrence Seaway and then having to portage half way to get to your destination. Simply stupid!
Have we learned NOTHING from the stadium debacle?
