An N-D-P motion that seeks to protect pensioners has unanimous support in the Legislature.
Pensions Critic Jennifer French’s private member’s motion calls on the federal government to ensure that benefits owed to pensioners be given top priority in the event that a company files for bankruptcy.
French cited the U.S. Steel example, in saying no worker “should be forced to wonder whether or not their full pension will be there when they retire”.
She describes as “shameful”, U.S. Steel Canada’s court-approved decision to back a loan to its American parent company before funding its pension plan.
At Queen’s Park to support the motion were the heads of Steelworkers Local 1005 and 8782, which represent thousands of Hamilton and Lake Erie Works pensioners.
