Hundreds of elementary students made their way to Saltfleet high school today for a one day Special Olympics event.
High spirits took over the gymnasium as students got ready to head out to the field for a full day of athletics.
Everything from races to field hockey.
Mount Albion teacher and event organizer Casey Duffy has watched this event grow over the past decade.
“We started with a couple hundred kids and now between the two events, we have another event for the high school kids in a few weeks, we have almost 800 kids coming out.”
Winona elementary teacher Rosa Cleland says it’s a big day for these students.
“They come with this real confidence, they come feeling like winners.”
Duffy agrees, “you’ll see kids that have all kinds of challenges in their life be it physical or developmental and they’re just out here having fun.”
Adding, “for some of them this would be there day that they are out representing their school and they may not get another chance to do that.”
Duffy hopes this event sparks an interest among students to get involved with similar community teams.
