In a twist, Halton’s Catholic School Board has rejected an update to its discipline and anti-bullying policy.
It’s a policy that had been previously approved, unanimously, at the committee level and was in line with what’s required under the province’s Education Act and the Ontario Human Rights Code.
It was narrowly rejected in a 4-3 vote after one trustee raised concerns that mentioning sexual orientation or gender identity could go against religious teachings.
The policy now has to go back to committee for review.
Board Chair Jane Michael says she was surprised by the vote, adding the Halton Catholic Board is already far behind a deadline for an updated policy as required by the Ministry of Education.
The issue is due to come back to the board in June.
