On a sun splashed Sunday morning in Hamilton, the Tiger-Cats kicked off their 2016 training camp at McMaster University.
Just before camp began, the team placed star quarterback Zach Collaros on the Veterans Exempt List, meaning he cannot participate in on field drills.
Linebacker Byron Archambault, who also ended last season on the injured list, is also on the Veterans Exempt List.
Dynamic kick returner Brandon Banks did not participate on day one of camp.
Head coach Kent Austin says “Speedy B” is dealing with some “family issues” and has been put on the suspended list until he returns.
When asked when he plans to return to action, Collaros wouldn’t divulge a target date, only mentioning “July,” along with a chuckle.
Hamilton opens the regular season June 23 in Toronto before returning for the home opener on Canada Day against B.C.
Austin has said Collaros would not begin the season under centre, leaving Jeremiah Masoli, Jeff Mathews, Jacory Harris and Jake Waters to compete for the starting spot.
Masoli says he has prepared for this year’s training camp the same way he prepared for his four previous camps in the CFL, calling it “a long journey.”
On defence, Courtney Stephen has switched from the boundary cornerback spot to safety, at least on day one, in a bid to replace Canadian Craig Butler, who could miss the entire season with a knee injury.
Butler and offensive lineman Jake Olson (knee) will start the 2016 campaign on the 6 game injured list.
The Ticats have only two kickers at camp after Austin said they were surprised by the departure of one of their kickers (Delbert Alvarado) who “got an opportunity” elsewhere.
But he said they will bring in a third person to compete with former REDBLACKS kicker Brett Maher and Cody Mandell, a two time BCS national champion with Alabama.
Hamilton also signed receiver LaQuan Williams just before camp began.
He spent time on the Saskatchewan Roughriders practice roster last year and has played 23 games in the NFL (2011/12) with the Baltimore Ravens.
Training camp resumes Monday at Ron Joyce Stadium.
