When does the absence of a star player start to become an issue?
It’s a question Tiger-Cats head coach Kent Austin may soon find out, on two fronts.
Special teams star Brandon Banks is still not at training camp as he deals with a “family issue” back home in North Carolina.
Austin says he doesn’t have an update on Banks’ situation, but adds they are preparing for Saturday’s preseason opener in Toronto with the players who are in camp.
And that’s all he, and the team, can do right now.
The good news is, Banks should be back with the team sooner rather than later.
The Cats are also playing the cards they’ve been dealt with at the QB position.
With Zach Collaros on the shelf as he rehabs his ACL, Hamilton has four pivots in camp.
Jeremiah Masoli and Jeff Mathews have the inside track at the #1 gig, with Jacory Harris and newcomer Jake Waters battling for 3rd stringer reps.
With Collaros’ return up in the air, the pressure is on Hamilton’s offence to find it’s gear early.
If it doesn’t, and the team sputters out of the gate, it certainly could manifest into a bigger issue.
