I just don’t understand the hair-brained opposition to the proposed change to the lyrics of O Canada.
There is a bill working it’s way through Parliament that would change the line ‘ all thy sons command’ to ‘ in all of us command’.
The Conservatives are doing everything they can to block the bill and one has to wonder about their motivation.
Are they frightened by the fact that the new lyric is gender neutral ?
Or, is it the frivolous argument that we should never change the words to our national anthem ?
Let’s inject some truth into the debate.
If this change is made, it will be the fifth time that some of the lyrics to O Canada have been altered and never before has there been such an uproar about the changes.
By the way, if any of the Conservatives who oppose this change had done their homework, they’d realize that the ‘new’ lyric isn’t new at all, it’s actually the same as the original lyric for O Canada ; ‘ thy sons command’ was one of the many changes to the original song.
It seems that even a hundred years ago, the original composer of O Canada, Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier was a lot more visionary and inclusive than some of the small-minded, partisan MP’s who sit in Parliament today.
