It is being called the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.
Officials say at around 2 a.m. Sunday morning a man opened fire inside an LGBT club in Orlando, Florida, killing at least 50 people and injuring 53 others.
In a media conference, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said the shooter used an assault type weapon, a handgun and “some type of device on him.”
He also said the suspect, identified as Omar Mateen of Ft. Pierce, Florida, was shot and killed by police.
It followed a gunfight with police that officials say left one officer shot.
U.S. Congressman Alan Grayson told reporters, “There’s blood everywhere. There’s an enormous amount of evidence to be collected.”
Florida Governor Rick Scott said “This is clearly an act of terrorism. It should make every American angry.”
Orlando Police Chief John Mina said “It appears (the shooter) was organized and well prepared.”
A hotline has been created for concerned parents as the process of identifying the victims continues.
