The latest salvo in the LRT debate was fired by a number of former Mayors and Regional Chairs encouraging City Council to re-affirm support for LRT.
Of course, LRT advocates are hailing the move, but I’m not sure that the endorsement from the Chain Of Office Alumni is going to have much impact.
I like and respect all of the former politicians who signed the letter, but if they truly believe that their letter is going to sway votes on Council, I think they’re sadly mistaken.
No one on the current Council is going to be shamed into supporting LRT and no one who is opposed to LRT is likely to change their mind because of the letter.
It really amounts to a feel good exercise for LRT supporters, but it does nothing to address the concerns of some long standing businesses along the route.
The good news is , while some Councilors drag their feet on the issue, City staff are rolling right along toward design and implementation , including dealing with the concerns of those affected businesses.
Let’s deal with legitimate questions respectfully , let’s face the reality that there isn’t going to be unanimous support on Council or in the community for LRT, and let’s put an end to the political grandstanding and get just get the job done.
