There’s been a lot of concern about the proposed expansion and extended life of the Taro Landfill site over the past few weeks,
The Board of Education is worried because they plan to build a school across the road from the site.
Residents are concerned because they thought the landfill site would be shut down in a few years, not expanded.
But why is nobody asking why Hamilton is still clinging to landfill sites as a method of dealing with our waste ?
Landfill sites are a 19th Century solution to garbage disposal; many European and Scandinavian countries have banned the use of landfill sites.
Instead, they use energy from waste gasification plants to not only dispose of waste, but produce energy to reduce the cost of hydro for their communities.
But narrow minded politicians who don’t seem to grasp the science of gasification reject the technology that has created a win-win environmental situation for so many cities around the world.
Here in Hamilton, we still think it’s OK to throw our garbage in a hole and pretend that it will not cause problems.
The debate shouldn’t be about expanding the Taro Landfill site; it should be about when Hamilton will start using 21st Century technology to deal with waste ?
