What a difference a day makes !
Yesterday, there was great consternation that the Anglican Church had voted ,by the slimmest of margins , against blessing same sex marriages.
But, after a recount of the vote, the Church announced that they had reversed the earlier decision .
Of course, same sex marriage has been legal in Canada for over 10 years now, and despite the predictions that the institution of marriage would fall apart, our society has not suffered, but, in fact, has been strengthened by allowing people to marry who they love.
Religions, however, have been slow to be as welcoming to the LGBTQ community and it has caused many members of those faith communities to feel shunned and alienated.
It’s as if they don’t want to acknowledge that there are LGBTQ Catholics, and Jews and Muslims and every other religious denomination who want to practice their faith and, at the same time, marry the love of their life.
Sadly, that’s not likely to change anytime soon, which is why the Anglican vote is so significant.
It sends a message to the LGBTQ community that they are welcome and respected and loved.
It’s a bold move by the Anglican Church and it’s the right thing to do.
We can only hope that other religions will see the light and follow that example.
