The father of missing five-year-old Taliyah Leigh Marsman told Global News in an exclusive phone interview Thursday morning that he is working closely with the police and doesn’t recognize the car that was seen on security footage near where Sara Baillie’s vehicle was found.
Police confirmed Wednesday Baillie had been murdered. Her body was found Monday in the northwest Calgary basement suite she rented with her daughter Taliyah.
In the two-minute interview conducted after police announced they have a man in custody in connection with the case, Colin Marsman told Global News reporter Reid Fiest that he did not know anything more than anyone else in the case.
Marsman said that has been cooperating with police and that he speaks with them ‘every hour.’
A search for evidence is on-going near Chestermere.
The Amber Alert for Taliyah Leigh Marsman remains in effect.
Police confirm they have taken a man into custody for questioning about Taliyah Marsman’s disappearance.
Detective Andy Nguyen says the arrest took place in the city.
Charges have not been laid and no details about the man’s identity have been released.
Officers are searching a rural area east of the city for evidence in her disappearance and Nguyen says police hope to find Taliyah there.
An Amber Alert issued early Tuesday morning remains in effect.
Taliyah’s mother, Sara Baillie was found dead in their home by police responding to the family’s call that she had not turned up for work on Monday.
The footage appears to show Baillie speaking with a family at the DQ.
“Police would like to identify this family,” Insp. Don Coleman told reporters at Calgary Police headquarters on Wednesday. He added the footage appeared to suggest Baillie knew the family because she waved and chatted with them on the way in and on the way out of the restaurant.
“So, potentially being one of the last people to have seen [Baillie and Marsman] them, we would like to chat,” Coleman said.
Witnesses in the northwest community of Panorama, where the missing girl lived, spotted a child matching Marsman’s description Monday morning just before noon, police added.
Police said the girl was seen with a stocky, black man near Baillie’s vehicle, which was close to Panamount Boulevard N.W. The girl was wearing red or pink boots with white polka dots and was carrying a reddish-coloured suitcase.
“We believe there is a good possibility that’s Taliyah and an unknown male and we’re chasing down leads on that,” Coleman said. “If it is Taliyah, the suitcase is a promising indication that whoever she is with has the intentions of caring for her to some degree.”
Police said they have been in contact with Baille’s estranged husband, 36-year-old Colin Evan Marsman, who is also Taliyah Marsman’s father, and that he has been cooperating with police.
Both Baillie and Colin Marsman were known to police due to domestic-violence related calls.
Global News learned that Baillie and Colin Marsman were in family court last Thursday over child support payment issues.
