St. Leonard’s Society of Hamilton is hoping to close the community’s digital divide one laptop at a time.
The organization’s GreenByte program has gifted 66 laptops to newly graduated Cathy Wever students so that they have the tools to succeed in highschool.
Program Director Ryan Johnson says it’s about breaking down barriers for youth from low income families.
“Kids are able to share these computers with their family and a lot of new Canadians are able to talk to family back at home for no cost,” Johnson continued. “The kids are teaching adults who’ve never had the opportunity, how to use a computer.”
The GreenByte team will help maintain the laptop for as long as the youth chooses to use it.
In the 15 years since the program started more than 4,000 laptops have been donated to low income families in the Hamilton area.
