It’s very informal at this point with only eight or nine members, but a group called the “Soldiers of Odin” is setting up in Hamilton.
And some critics are worried it could lead to racial tensions.
The international organization was founded in Finland in late 2015 and has a stated aim to “take back the streets.”
Members in other Canadian cities patrol neighbourhoods but the organization’s national president tells the CBC that their focus in Hamilton will be on cleaning up local parks.
He denies that the group is anti-immigration, or anti-Muslim, although it’s bylaws state that “higher authorities” are “failing the Canadian citizens” with their immigration policies.
Ward 3 councillor Mathew Green hopes the group doesn’t gain a foothold in Hamilton and West Hamilton resident Paul Glendinning agrees.
He’s made a graphic being shared on social media that says “Soldiers of Odin Not Welcome in Hamilton.”
