A longtime Hamilton business owner says its time the province does something about rising hydro rates.
Tom Schofield owns Scoly’s Hometown Market on the mountain and says despite investing 300-thousand dollars over the last five years to reduce energy consumption, his hydro bills have doubled over that same period.
He says his monthly bill has gone up by 35 per cent in the last year alone.
Schofield says he’s had to lay off five employees and reduce hours for others and admits the business is struggling.
Hamilton Mountain NDP MPP Monique Taylor says Schofield is not alone, saying her office hears from businesses and individuals every day who complain about the escalating cost of hydro.
Taylor says some residents are having to choose between paying their hydro bill and buying medication or putting food on the table.
Taylor will be hosting a town hall meeting to discuss rising hydro rates at St. Stephen on the Mount, starting at 6pm, on August 23.
