An animal rights activist who is on trial for criminal mischief says “pigs deserve rights just like the rest of us.”
Tuesday marked the start of the so-called “Pig Trial” after Anita Krajnc was charged last summer for giving water to a pig that was being trucked to a pork processing plant.
A video of the incident went viral.
The Toronto woman says she doesn’t believe pigs are property, adding they are “precious” and “sentient beings that deserve personhood” and should not be treated as property or “slabs of meat.”
If found guilty, Kranjc faces a 5-thousand dollar fine or six months in jail.
Kranjc says she is confident she will be acquitted and wants the laws around the slaughter of pigs to change.
The trial is expected to continue tomorrow and then recess until November or December.
