The mayor of Thorold is ordering the town’s junior hockey teams to change their nickname.
The Thorold Blackhawks have been given until next June to come up with a new moniker and logo, which is seen as offensive to First Nations people.
The team’s cartoon-like logo, resembling the Chicago Blackhawks crest, has been used since the early 1980s.
The city removed the logo from its arena last year.
The owner of the “Junior B” Blackhawks says the team has a new logo but the cost of the new uniforms has held up the process.
