Conservative leadership candidate Kellie Leitch is once again targeting immigrants and refugees in her attempt to curry favour with conservative voters.
In a mail out to supporters, Leitch is asking if the Canadian government should screen potential immigrants and refugees for what she calls ‘ anti-Canadian values’.
You may remember that Leitch spearheaded a controversial program to institute a so-called ‘barbaric cultural practices hotline ‘ to encourage Canadians to snitch on immigrants or refugees whose activities were deemed suspicious by their neighbours.
After a huge outcry from sensible Canadians, Leitch tried to backtrack and suggest that the program was meant to protect women immigrants, although she made no mention of that when she introduced the program.
Now, as Leitch attempts a run at the Conservative leadership, she’s doubling down on that fear mongering that every Muslim is a potential terrorist.
Of course, Leitch fails to acknowledge that there is already a thorough and effective screening of all immigrants and refugees and it’s working, but she clearly wants to take a page from the Donald Trump playbook of spreading fear and mistrust.
Canada has a global reputation as a country that welcomes the victims of war and persecution to our country.
Leitch needs to understand that targeting people because of the colour of their skin or their religion is the most un-Canadian value of all !
