Hamilton is the City of Waterfalls; we have more natural waterfalls within our city limits than any other city in the world.
We should be proud of that and we should explore these incredible natural assets.
But, can we please use a little common sense while we’re doing it ?
This past weekend, there were five more rescues of citizens who had fallen or became trapped in our many waterfalls.
That brings this year’s total to 20 and sadly, that’s pretty much in line with the number of similar incidents in past years.
Many people have suffered injuries in these incidents and frankly, we’re fortunate that there haven’t been more fatalities.
Maybe we need to be reminded of a few common sense rules that apply here.
First of all, if you’ve been drinking, going for a walk in the dark near a waterfall might not be the best idea.
Whether it’s day or night, standing on the edge of a cliff or waterfall is dangerous, some people seem to forget that.
And, if you’re not an experienced rock climber without proper equipment, don’t take any risks.
The emergency rooms are already full of weekend athletes who over-extend themselves ; why add to that number ?
We’re blessed to have so many natural tourist attractions in Hamilton.
By all means, enjoy them, but , let’s be smart about it !
