A man has been charged after a downtown Hamilton mosque was set on fire.
Just before 11:30 Wednesday night, police and firefighters were called to the Ibrahim Jame Mosque on King Street East at Arthur.
Police say witnesses saw a man setting a fire at the entrance of the mosque before running away.
The witnesses quickly put out the flames and chased after the suspect, who was arrested by police shortly after.
34 year old Keith Frederick has been charged with arson and is bail has been opposed. Damage is minimal.
A volunteer with Hamilton’s Downtown Mosque is voicing mixed feelings.
Sayed Hashemi says they are saddened by the arson, but thankful for neighbours who helped extinguish the fire.
Hashemi adds that “Islam is a religion of love, peace, and tolerance” and anyone with questions has only to ask since they are open to the public all the time.
He stresses that they “never expected such a thing to happen” in this community.
