The first of Ontario’s new High Occupancy Toll lanes have opened today on the Q-E-W through Oakville and Burlington.
People who bought special permits for 180 dollars are able to use the lanes on the 16 kilometre stretch.
Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca says they received about 35 hundred applications for the permits which have been strategically capped at 500.
He stresses that “the last thing in the world that we want to do” is create a situation where “the HOV lanes are as clogged as the general purpose lanes”.
Vehicles with two or more occupants can still travel in the HOT lanes for free.
