U.S. Steel Canada is getting some money back.
Haldimand County has been ordered to pay the troubled steelmaker 540-thousand dollars in tax rebates.
It’s for the months the mills were down during the lockout.
That is in addition to the almost 2-million dollars in tax cuts U.S. Steel Canada received in a reassessment of its Lake Erie Works property taxes last year.
On top of that, the company was given court permission last year to stop paying property taxes altogether.
When added up, it comes to about 4.4-million dollars which Haldimand County Mayor Ken Hewitt says is a real blow to the community.
