Depending on which newspaper you read or what commentator you listen to, the latest expense account abuse, this time by two Liberal senior staffers, is either the biggest scandal of our generation or, much ado about nothing.
And, let’s be honest, your personal political leaning will certainly influence your perspective on the matter.
But, don’t forget that the Harper government had their share of expense abuses and the NDP were ordered to pay back a substantial amount of taxpayer’s money that was deemed to be wrongly spent on partisan NDP business.
So, does that cancel out the latest episode ?
Absolutely not; in fact, it re-enforces the feeling that many Canadians have, namely , that we can’t trust these people with our money.
There’s something in the air in Ottawa that makes even good hearted people go a little squirrely and develop this sense of entitlement that makes them think that the money in the Treasury is theirs for the taking.
The money spent isn’t going to bankrupt the country, but there is an ethical bankruptcy in Ottawa that everyone talks about , but does nothing to fix it.
No political party has the moral high ground here.
The mantra in Ottawa seems to be ‘ do what I say, not what I do’, and that should be a concern to all Canadians.
