The President of St. Joseph’s Healthcare says they are committed to acting on all 25 recommendations.
Dr. David Higgins is responding to an external review of safety within the hospital’s mental health program. It was commissioned after nurses were injured during a series of violent incidents with patients.
Higgins stresses that there are challenges attached to being the regional centre for caring for those with significant mental health and addictions.
He adds that they accept those challenges and the responsibility that comes with it.
Recommendations range from better training of nurses and examining the caseloads of psychiatrists to more activities for patients with mental health issues.
Higgins notes that work is underway, or has been completed, on most if not all of the recommendations.
