It was a night he’ll never forget… and neither will we.
Awesome Auston, Magical Matthews, whatever you want to call him, Auston Matthews has arrived.
The Maple Leafs’ #1 overall draft pick became the first player in NHL history to score 4 goals in his NHL debut Thursday night, although Toronto lost 5-4 in overtime in Ottawa.
I can spend the next minute or so telling you how amazing Matthews is, but we already know about his skill, hockey smarts and potential.
What impressed me the most about Matthews is that when he scored his first goal he celebrated like it was his 500th.
And the same happened with goals 2, 3 and 4… some emotion… but not over the top.
There was a flurry of emotion on Twitter, as hockey fans shared their reaction to Matthews’ amazing start to his career.
And former and current players got into the act.
My favourite, though, came from former Leafs enforcer Frazer McLaren.
Can’t wait to see what Matthews does on Saturday night when the Leafs host Boston.
