Am I the only one who caught the deflating news in the consultants report about the proposed waterfront development ?
As you know, the City is looking for a private sector partner to develop the lands around Piers 7 and 8, in and around the existing Williams Coffee Pub and Sarcoa Restaurant, and there are great expectations for the development in that area.
To be sure, the plans look great with low rise residential and some affordable housing in the mix as well.
But the consultants say there is little interest in building commercial and office space in the project, and there’s the rub.
Many of us envisioned a waterfront with shops and restaurants, a place where Hamiltonians from all over the City could enjoy our waterfront.
I’m not looking to replicate the Las Vegas Strip, but I think we were all expecting a destination location, not just another neighbourhood full of residential properties.
The consultants report kind of lets the air out of that balloon.
They suggest that after all the residential units are built and occupied, maybe some of those shops and restaurants will be proposed.
I certainly hope so.
I still support the project, but too many times we’ve had our civic enthusiasm dashed when the final product doesn’t match the hype.
