Hamilton councillors have been put on notice — they are on the clock.
After seeing a consultant report recommending remapping Hamilton’s ward boundaries — by either changing the existing 15 ward system — or by adding a 16th ward — councillors have decided to consult residents and to submit their own plans for redrawing the boundaries.
Not everyone is happy with that.
Local activist Matt Jelly is in the process of collecting 500 signatures for a petition to be submitted to the city.
When completed, the city will have 90 days to react to the petition and if the signatories are unhappy with the response, it can be taken to the Ontario Municipal Board.
Jelly says the issue has been dealt with four times since amalgamation and this time the issue needs to be resolved.
He considers his petition as a fail safe to ensure that council deals with the issue in good faith.
Jelly believes the new boundaries should be in place in time for the 2018 municipal election.
