The furor continues over the report of a Hamilton judge wearing a Donald Trump ‘ Make America Great Again’ cap in his courtroom the day after Trump won the American Presidential election last week.
Many callers to The Bill Kelly Show were outraged that Judge Bernd Zabel wore the cap when he entered his courtroom that day.
Reports indicate that Judge Zabel removed the cap but placed it on his desk in plain view and that he wore the cap again in the afternoon session of court.
An Osgoode Hall law professor has filed a formal complaint with the Ontario Judicial Council and now, the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund has filed a second complaint on this issue.
Admittedly, wearing a Trump cap doesn’t necessarily indicate that Judge Zabel endorses the many racist and misogynist comments made by Trump.
But Judge Zabel had to be aware of the perceived implications of aligning himself with a person who has made demeaning comments about women and racial minorities.
Any member of a racial minority, or, a female sexual assault victim appearing in Judge Zabel’s court now has to wonder if he harbours the same twisted values of Donald Trump.
Judge Zabel’s action has cast a worrisome cloud of doubt on the impartiality of our court system and that should concern all of us.
