Ontario Liberals held their annual meeting in Ottawa this past weekend and their leader, Premier Kathleen Wynne addressed the apprehensive Liberal gathering.
Apprehensive, because with a Provincial election about 18 months away, the Liberal government is plagued with woefully low voter support.
There’s little doubt that the number one reason for the discontent is skyrocketing hydro rates.
Well now the Premier is taking ownership of the problem, declaring that the escalating hydro rates were ‘her mistake’.
Actually, she’s only partly correct.
This all started when her predecessor , Dalton McGuinty committed the government to a costly, and not very effective , alternative energy program.
But Wynne certainly doubled down on the mistake and ramped up the government spending.
The government has tried to justify the increases by suggesting that there were much needed upgrades required for our hydro infrastructure, while critics suggest it was simply misguided government spending.
It’s a moot point at this stage; hydro rates have risen almost 70% in the past few years and that’s simply unacceptable.
It’s hurting businesses and it’s become a major problem with homeowners.
Wynne promises to introduce measures to reduce hydro rates since the previously announced rebate program has been dismissed as ‘ineffective’.
We’ll see what she comes up with because most certainly, the fate of her government hangs in the balance.
