We’re told that the in depth study of Hamilton’s entertainment facilities has been completed, but we won’t see the results for some time.
City staff want to digest the information and offer some comments, which means we won’t get the info until sometime early in the new year.
I’m OK with the idea of doing the study; it was done with private sector money and it will give an independent assessment and some suggestions of what to do with Hamilton’s tired and some would suggest, outdated entertainment facilities.
The big question is, do we renovate or attempt to build new facilities ?
The two areas of largest concern are First Ontario Centre and the Convention Centre.
What bothers me is that some proponents still think we need to have an NHL -ready arena with all the bells and whistles in case the NHL comes knocking at our door.
Have we not learned anything from the past 25 years ?
The NHL didn’t reject Hamilton all those times because of the arena; they simply don’t want a team anywhere near Toronto or Buffalo, especially since rich guy Terry Pegula has infused millions of dollars into the Buffalo hockey team.
We need a plan to maintain our city-owned facilities; that’s a no-brainer.
But let’s not base the plans on an unrealistic fantasy that will never come true.
