We’re told that the Harper government is ‘ troubled’ by the current conflict in the senior ranks of the RCMP.
We’re glad to hear that , because we’re troubled by it too.
What else can go wrong with this beleaguered national police force? Former Commissioner Zachardelli left amid a cloud of accusations of cronyism, political interference and low morale.
Things were so bad, we were told, that the Prime Minister hired an outsider to go in and clean things up.
In fact, William Elliott was so much an outsider, that he had never been a cop, let alone a member of the RCMP.
Well, senior officers have officially complained to the Prime Minister’s office about Commissioner Elliott’s conduct citing verbal abuse and other complaints.
It’s another link in a chain of events that have tarnished the reputation of the RCMP.
It comes hot on the heels of the tazer controversy in Vancouver, the Arar case, and the Air India investigation which castigated both the RCMP and CSIS for their handing of that investigation. And, the Oliphant Commission cast serious doubts about the RCMP handling of the Airbus Investigation.
The government wanted to rejuvenate morale and restore confidence in the RCMP when they appointed Elliott to the top job.
Three years in, still mired in controversy, we have every right to ask if they gave the job to the right person.
