Outdoor Smoking Ban The Right Way To Go
Posted 3/6/2012 6:25:00 AM

I suppose I should state my bias up front; smoking is bad for the smoker and for those around them.

I’ve been at the bedside and have seen dear family and friends painfully struggle to draw their final breaths as they succumb to cardio pulmonary diseases.

Death by cancer is ugly and horrific.

That’s one of the reasons I support City Council’s plan to ban smoking in open air facilities.

Little kids on playgrounds should not be exposed to second hand smoke.

Smoking makes those parents and those kids more sick, more often, and yes, it is one of the major  factors that drives up the cost of health care.

We’ve done a lot to curtail emissions from vehicles and industry but we don’t do enough to curtail emissions from smokers.

Enforcement is done on a complaint basis and amazingly enough, the compliance level is extremely high.

Even at Ivor Wynne Stadium, there are still a few inconsiderate jerks who light up under the stands, but the vast majority of smokers are considerate and compliant.

Some Councilors want to modify   the list where the ban would apply and I suppose that’s to be expected.

But, please , don’t gut the bylaw.

Stay the course Council; it’s the right thing to do.

I cordially invite all to visit Eastwood Park when there's a breeze from the Nor' East which is pretty well constantly. Now, smell the Cordite from Bermingham's gunpowder-assisted piledrivers...ahhh, then the sweet smell of Diesel from the ships coming, going or unloading at the docks. Couple that with the lovely Fragrance of Bunje's Vegetable oil plant. THEN tell me the smoke from my lone cigarette is going to affect some kiddies playing on the swings fifty yards away. This is "Nanny State" madness. The City must be bored dealing with the important issues, so they collect brownie points by picking the low-hanging fruit (ie: us Lepers - I mean, smokers) As far as the dicarded butts - Go to a designated smoking area a la Copp's or Carmen's where they have many ashtrays. You'll hardly see a butt anywhere. Simply put out an ashtray - and we compliant smokers WILL use them ! I'd rather step on a cigarette butt, than dog or goose feces, or barf from some drunken teenager in our Parks. Enough !

This means that the cheap coach bags old designer handbag collections are cleared out at reduced prices. A wise shopper keeps cheap coach handbags a keen eye on the sales and shops accordingly.
