Please Steelworkers, Don't Fall For The Rhetoric

Posted 2/2/2012 6:12:00 AM

I have great sympathy for the US Steel workers  who will receive layoff notices later this spring.

The fact that some of them didn’t see this coming  tells me that they were getting bad information from someone; it was  general knowledge that the 2012 economic picture was pretty glum.

But, as those workers come to grips with this reality, please do yourselves a favour, and don’t fall for the patronizing political rhetoric that has already started.

Don’t believe the politicians that say they’re fighting for you; they’re not.

They’re trying to grab headlines and create false hope.

Because you know, deep down inside, that no government is going to order these guys to make steel if there is no market to sell it.

The fact that just about every other US Steel facility is gearing up, except for Hamilton,  really makes you wonder about the long term future of the Hamilton plant.

Did the Federal government let these guys off the hook when they dropped the  legal ...

Staff Turnover Is Inevitable..Deal With It !

Posted 1/31/2012 6:23:00 AM

The hang wringing at City Hall because half of senior staff members are eligible for retirement over the next few years is no big deal, and neither is the fact that some managers have left for greener pastures  anything  to be alarmed about.

First of all, eligible to retire and actually retiring are two very different things these days.

There is no longer a mandatory retirement age and my guess is that many of the senior managers will stick around.

As for the staff turnover, get over it… it happens.

As positions open up in other municipalities, it stands to reason that the brightest and the best from our staff would be recruited to move.

Heck, many of Hamilton’s  managers were recruited from other cities.

Let’s not be shocked when someone else poaches our staff.

Besides, turnover is good. It brings in new people and new ideas, and for ...
