Patriots vs. Giants, who wins?

Posted 2/3/2012 6:12:00 AM

Super Bowl Sunday is nearly here.

The New England Patriots and New York Giants are set to butt heads at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The Pats, with Tom Brady and their high-octane offence, are favoured by as much as 3 points.

The G-Men, featuring a relentless defence, are hoping history repeats itself.

The two teams met in the 2008 NFL final when the Giants ruined New England's perfect season with an improbable last minute victory.

So, will history repeat itself?

Four years removed from that game in Arizona, both teams retain the same characteristics.

New England's defence has to play it's best game of the year to have any shot at winning on Sunday.

The Giants win if Eli Manning doesn't turn the ball over and the defence gets to Brady.

Prediction time... Giants 24, Patriots 23.

As Obie says, "better is better"

Posted 2/2/2012 6:13:00 AM

It' not a big surprise.

Just days after acquiring free agent running back Martell Mallett, the Tiger-Cats have cut ties with Avon Cobourne.

Cobourne, who spent just one season in Hamilton, was released by the Cats yesterday.

Right guard Simeon Rottier and defensive tackle Luc Mullinder were also given their walking papers.

It's too bad Cobourne couldn't stay, but as VP of Football Operations Bob O'Billovich says "better is better."

Mallett -- the CFL's rookie of the year in 2009 -- is younger, and cheaper than Cobourne.

As for Rottier, the Ticats tried hard to keep him here, presenting him with multiple offers, including an offer that would have made him one of the highest paid linemen in the league.

But Obie says it was clear Rottier didn't want to stay.

He's from Alberta and will likely end up with the Eskimos.

Oh the good old CFL off-season, always bringing ...

Encouraging news for Crosby

Posted 2/1/2012 6:13:00 AM

The news is encouraging, and frustrating at the same time.

It turns out Sidney Crosby's latest concussion-related layoff may not even be a concussion.

Doctors say he has a more-treatable neck injury that went undiagnosed for weeks, if not months.

The Penguins captain has a soft tissue injury, and not a neck fracture, that is causing swelling in his top two vertebrae.

The most encouraging thing is that none of the physicians and specialists who've been consulted believe the problem might be career-threatening.

Crosby has played just 8 games over the last 13 months, and even though he began practising this week, he says there is no timetable for his return.

There's no doubt the NHL is a much better, more marketable league with Crosby on the ice.

Let's hope that his return comes sooner... rather than later.
