Open house held for Anderson LRT
The public was given a chance to provide input on four preliminary concept drawings for the future of Anderson Station. The city doesn't need all the parking at the 20 acre Anderson Station anymore since it is not the end of the C-Train line anymore. So it is looking at redeveloping a lot of the land and provided a few different options at an open house on Wednesday.Paul Edney says he didn't have a clear favourite of the four concepts but redevelopment can't come soon enough for him."I just think that Anderson right now in itself is a bit of a dump, to be honest with you, it's in disrepair, windows are missing and i think this would help to improve things."The final design is expected to go to council next year and optimistically, shovels could be in the ground in 2015 or the following year.

City committee approves study on school and playground zones
A city committee has given the green light to a year-long pilot project aimed at increasing school zone and playground zone awareness.  But one alderman thinks it's time to wipe the slate clean.  Part of the problem now is you have year-round schools and private schools that don't operate on the same old September-June schedule.Add in schools with staggered start and end times and count Alderman Gord Lowe as one of those who isn't really sure when a school zone is in effect. The question becomes: should playground zones and school zones be one and the same?Lowe does like some of the awareness pilot project ideas, which include more and bigger signs and neighborhood speed watch programs. But he thinks they need to start with a "fresh sheet of paper" in dealing with the confusion, which could start with talking to the province about harmonizing the two zones, which he refers to as "areas".The pilot project will not include rumble strips because of noise complaints from nearby residents.

UPDATE: Committee approves parking rate changes
The city's transporation committee has passed a recommendation to lower parking rates in under utilized parking spaces downtown. The Calgary Parking Authority's goal is to get a few more people parking in the fringe areas like the downtown's west end and the East Village. GM Troy McLeod tells the Morning News on News Talk 770 they want to base it more on occupancy and less on a set-in-stone rate.  He says. "That's where we want to head as far as the availability of space so that people can always find a spot and then structure the price around that.  So there would be discounted prices where parking is available and where there's parking that's highly busy then we'd have a different price structure.  For a typical spot in the downtown that costs $5/hr, the price will drop to $4.50/hr in July, then will go up or down $0.25/hr, depending on the demand.  Officials say they are also looking into having the pricing depend on the time of day, so more busy times will see higher prices.  But that worries some like Calgary Downtown Association executive director Maggie Schofield, who says restaurants will see a negative impact because people are already going elsewhere ...

Traffic lab set up at U of C
The U of C Schulich School of Engineering has opened a traffic lab that will use real time data from sensors on the Deerfoot to help map out solutions to increase road safey and ease congestion. The Alberta Motor Association is sold on the idea, providing $750 thousand for the initiative. The new traffic lab is taking data it is getting from 15 sensors along an 8 kilometer section of the Deerfoot and will test possible solutions with a simulator. Don Szarko, with the AMA, says we have a car culture in Alberta and the key to addressing congestion is innovation. "Every time we make an enhancement and it provides new information, it just increases the appetite for more data.   We like data and we process a lot of data and we like to make choices."The new lab will look at the effectiveness of ramp metering, that is limiting the number of cars entering freeways from ramps.   Solutions can even have information transmitted directly to your vehicle about what is the best route to take to avoid congestion.
