Mexican media reports say a retired female Mountie has been murdered in her home on the Mayan Riviera.
Reports from Playa del Carmen say the woman believed to be sixty was stabbed multiple times in what police believe was a robbery. The woman, identified as Rachel Lynn Eavle, may have been dead for some time before her body was discovered in her home yesterday (Wednesday) morning.
It's believed she lived in a suburb of Playa del Carmen for several years after retiring from the RCMP. Unfortunately, the Mexican media reports do not list a home town or province for the slain woman.

An online claim of Edmonton Police "brutality" on Whyte Avenue may come down to the tale of two tapes.
Cellphone video posted to YouTube shows an incident on Whyte Avenue apparently from earlier this week in which two young men are forcibly restrained on the ground. One man with his hands cuffed behind his back is seen bleeding from the side of his head but the cause is not clear. The man who posted the video says: "pay attention at when the cop put his knee on the neck of the guy who was getting punched... tell me that that much blood was justified."
The video also shows a pulsing red light on the chest of the officer who is restraining that man. Body Worn Video cameras used by some Whyte Avenue beat officers have a red recording light so it's possible police have their own video of the incident that will assist any investigation of the incident.
The man who posted the video says the officer turned on his own video camera only after he became aware the incident was being taped.

The city has taken delivery of some parking machines that will one day replace parking meters. E-Park machines are on loan from Calgary for a pilot project that will be formally announced June 7. The idea is, you punch in your license plate number, then the zone number (where the car is parked) and also the amount of time you will be parked there...you then insert your credit card and go.
Councillor Ben Henderson it should make life easier for drivers.""You can do it by credit card, you're not, having to try and find the right change and plug it in there anymore" says Henderson.
Crews will be testing them over the next few weeks to get the electronics working. (SJ/JSL)

Supporters of child victims of sexual abuse will march from City Hall to the Legislature grounds just after 9am.
You might be asking why the color orange?
Glori Meldrum, the founder of Little Warriors says that orange was selected because it’s the color for courage.
She says they also choose a frog to represent as the walks symbol.
“A frog never looks back, a frog is always moving forward, so that's why it was selected as the icon for the walk.”

There's a four letter word making the rounds at City Hall. It's soon.
As in several potential candidates for mayor will announce soon.
How soon is soon? Probably in the first week in June according to three of those getting some attention.
"Look I'm not ruling anything out today," said Kim Krushell who's a little more open to the possibility than she has been in the past. "I'm not going to make any decisions quickly. I wanted Stephen to run, and that's obviously not going to happen. There's 3 doors I can open - door one being mayor, door two running for council or three becoming a private citizen. I'll look at each one of those doors and make a decision soon."
The early June date is dictated by the annual convention of civic politicians, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, runs May 31 to June 4 in Vancouver. Most on city council will leave on the evening of the 29th.
Karen Leibovici's run as FCM president ends June 3.
"I've got some work still on my plate as president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and I want to finish that off then we'll let you know."

A lens from a pair of glasses was the weapon in an alleged hostage taking in holding cells at the Edmonton Law Courts.
The incident began around 11:30 Wednesday morning according to Insp. Dean Hilton, who was the duty commander for downtown division at the time.
"There were a couple of female inmates awaiting trial," Hilton told reporters, "and one of those inmates took the other inmate in a hostage situation, basically threatened harm on that individual. We know there was a pair of eyeglasses involved that may have been the implement that was used. We were able to negotiate a peaceful surrender without any injuries."
"The Sheriffs actually did a really good job with the initial containment on the situation, and eventually our members responded and took over. We had our negotiating team respond and they were able to work through their tactics to eventually get the suspect to surrender."
"We believe the weapon that was used by the subject was the glass lenses from the eyeglasses."
"I don't know if there was any history or relationship. All I know was they were both in a cell block awaiting trials this afternoon."
"it was contained with the cell area ...

Mayor Mandel confirms he won't rule out provincial politics at some point in the future. However, on the day after he affirmed he won't seek a fourth term as mayor, he's saying it won't be for at least three years until the next time we go to the polls for a provincial election in 2016. "I have nothing set in my plans to do anything politically, but who knows what the future might hold?" Mandel said."I'm the mayor of Edmonton right now and I'm quite happy doing it, and my wife and I are going to travel afterwards and who know's what might occur after that." "I'm here for the next five months."Travel plans over the holiday break will give Mandel time to think."I'm going to take a cruise with my wife and her and I'll will discuss what we're going to do. She's got a lot to say what my life's going to be so I don't know what's going to happen in the future. We have a future right now if that's what you're saying. It's three years before we have another election before that happens. Until then I'm not going to worry about it." ...

The worst could be behind them, as fire crews continue to battle that wildfire burning in Strathcona County.Fire chief Darrell Reid says even though it's windy again today, crews will be able to get ahead of the blaze, and contain it.
"It looks like the prevailing wind we're seeing today is going to be similar to what we saw (on Tuesday), so that's a good thing because it makes (the blaze) more predictable and easier for (firefighters) to manage."The fire continues to cover close to 650 hectares between Bruderheim and Fort Saskatchewan. Reid says the one concern he has is the embers that the wind is blowing around, creating a threat for more fires to pop up elsewhere. (lk)
