Edmonton man charged in million dollar drug bust
11 pm
An Edmonton man has been caught up in a million dollar drug bust by Winnipeg police. Project Deplete began in August 2011 targeting high level independent drug traffickers operating in Winnipeg and rural Manitoba. And after numerous search and arrest warrants, 13 people have been charged including Ramsey Yaggey, 32, of Edmonton. He's facing three different trafficking charges, along with possessing the proceeds of crime. The 12 other suspects from Winnipeg, all men ranging in age from 21 to 36, are also facing trafficking charges. Six of them remain on the loose with arrest warrants in place. RCMP say they seized 6912 grams of cocaine, 465 grams of "crack" cocaine, 272 grams of methamphetamine, 9,811 tablets of ecstasy, 1063 grams of MDMA, 501 tablets of oxycodone and 891 grams of marihuana. Those arrested so far, including Yaggey, will be appearing in Winnipeg court on February 6th. (td)

U of A sets another new dodgeball record
11 pm
In what's become a back-and-fourth affair, the University of Alberta is back on top in the Guinness World Records for the largest game of dodgeball. President of the Students' Union Rory Tighe says the goal was to knock the University of California at Irvine off its pedestal. "We had to beat a record of 4000 and we got a ton of people," remarked Tighe. "Our goal was 5000 and I think we had about that may people, but when you get down to the technicality of the record we had 4979. But we were turning people away so it was a huge success." So why turn people away? Tighe says they wanted to leave something in the bank for next time, in case California decides it wants back into the dodgeball record book. "We weren't trying to go full out. I think we wanted to give U of C, Irvine a little bit of a bone so they could beat it in the future if they wanted to." Tighe says the dodgeball event allows the students and staff to show their pride and spirit for the U of A. (td)

Fire Marshall says call 911, get insurance
6PM
Always get tenants insurance, and always call 911 if you detect a fire. Those are the lessons Edmonton's Fire Marshall wants you to learn from the devastating Heatheridge Estates Condo fire, January 19.Investigators confirm the fire was started when plumbers accidentally ignited some insulation, but the 911 call came three hours later.Fire Marshall Tom Karpa says if the 911 call had come in right away, it would be a different story."We had an identical fire in another apartment complex," Karpa explains. "Plumbers igniting insulation in the boiler room, they called us immediately, we contained the fire to two suites, damage estimated around $200,000."The three hour delay in the Heatheridge 911 call resulted in the total loss of the building, millions in damages, and 100 residents without a place to live.Karpa says you must always contact emergency services, even if you think you've dealt with a fire."They think they have the fire out, but you never know. Heat and fire travel mysteriously, and you may have a fire and you don't know it."Karpa adds the most heartbreaking thing is most of the residents had no tenants insurance."You know it's a shame," Karpa says. ...

ETS posts record high ridership numbers
5:10pm
There's a high demand for public transit in Edmonton.ETS is out with its ridership numbers for 2011, which show a record number of trips were taken on both busses and the LRT.Transportation GM Bob Boutilier says the numbers will help when ETS looks for more money to expand its service."The numbers really do help because city council has been very clear that it's committed to transit provided we can show that it is working, and the only way you can prove that transit is working is to show an increase in ridership. So, when you have numbers like this it says, 'if you invest, they will use it'."Just over 80 million rides were taken last year, translating into a five per cent increase over 2010. (lk)

Oilers legend proud of Gagner
3:36pm
Edmonton Oilers forward Sam Gagner joined some elite company on Thursday night with four goals and four assists in an 8-4 win over the Chicago Blackhawks at Rexall Place. Not only was it an outstanding individual achievement, but it also put Gagner's name next to the likes of Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey in the record books as the only Oilers to record eight points in a single game. Speaking on 630 CHED Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer, Coffey said he couldn't be happier for the 22-year-old. "I've met Sam a couple of times and just have a lot of respect for him," said Coffey. "I know it's been a tough year for him, and that's the intriguing part - usually when guys set these records or get on these rolls, it's when they're having a great season. Sam's had a bit of a tough one, [and] we're all hoping this will leap him into bigger and better things." The Hall of Fame defenceman admits he didn't get to witness Gagner's big night first-hand, because he turned off the TV when the Oilers went down 2-0, but woke up the next morning to a barrage of text messages telling him ...

DBA reacts to latest arena developments
2:20pm
The Downtown Business Association is giving a big thumbs up to the latest news surrounding the proposed downtown arena district. The Katz Group unveiled a partnership with locally-based WAM Development Group on Friday, which focuses on developing the area around the rink. In a statement, the group says WAM will play a significant role in finalizing a master plan, engaging architects and other professionals and managing all phases of the construction. The Downtown Business Association's Jim Taylor says it's a great move, because WAM is a proven and well-respected local business. "This adds that credible thing to the whole discussion that makes Edmontonians start to think, 'you know, this is really going to happen and these guys aren't arena builders, this isn't about building the arena, this is about building the arena district,'" said Taylor. "The arena is only on six acres, it's the 20 acres or 30 acres that's going to be developed around there and by osmosis, creep into the rest of downtown, and cause a couple of billion dollars worth of development over the next decade, that's really important to our downtown." It's expected that a hotel, or hotel-condominium project, a casino and office towers will all ...

Damage in condo fire pegged at $13 million
12:37pm
Edmonton's fire chief says a quick 911 call probably could have made a big difference in a multi-million dollar fire last month. The blaze at the Heatheridge Estates condo tower on Saddleback Road caused an estimated $13 million damage. It started when a plumber's torch came into contact with insulation. Workers tried to put out the fire, but it spread and turned into a three-alarm blaze that kept crews busy for 15 hours. Fire chief Ken Block says fires double in size every minute so the sooner you can call firefighters, the better. He also says this is another reminder to get proper tenant insurance. Some people didn't, and now they have nothing. (bd) On the Net: Fire engulfs south side apartment

EPS: Calls to Curb the Danger down
12:14pm
The EPS says calls to their Curb the Danger program are down lately, but it's likely not because there are fewer drunk drivers out on city streets. Police say the drop in calls may have something to do with the province's distracted driving legislation, which was brought in late last year. Because of that, officers are out with a reminder that it's okay to use your cell phone while you're driving, as long as you're using it to dial 9-1-1. There were 454 calls to Curb the Danger in January, which resulted in 173 EPS intercepts, 36 impaired charges and twelve 24-hour suspensions. In addition, 36 letters were issued to registered owners to let them know that their vehicle was spotted being driven erratically. If you see a suspected impaired driver, make the call and take note of the location, report the license plate and a description of the vehicle and keep the vehicle in sight, if you can. Police say the success of the Curb the Danger program has a lot to do with Edmontonians calling 9-1-1 to report suspected impaired drivers. (jk)
