    Fire Guts Recyling Facility
Crews were still mopping up well into Saturday morning from an overnight fire at a waste recycling plant in Hamilton's industrial core. Hamilton Fire was called to Thompson Waste Management on Strathearne Avenue North shortly after 9 o'clock Friday night. The facility handles non-hazardous construction materials, such as plywood and drywall and the blaze sent thick smoke over the area. The immediate area ---near Burlington Street East and Kennilworth Avenue North--- was evacuated and residents within a half-kilometre of the fire were told to keep their doors and windows closed. Dozens of firefighters, supported by seven fire vehicles, tackled the fire. There were no workers in the building at the time the fire broke out and no one was injured.

City gets $200-million for "top priority"
It's been called Hamilton's number one priority. The federal and provincial governments have each committed 100 million dollars towards upgrading the Woodward Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant. The City of Hamilton will pay the other 256 million. The expansion must be completed by 2016 and will allow the city to handle future growth and ensure that it can treat all of the effluent that comes into the treatment facility.   Mayor Eisenberger says that means no more worrying about flooded basements when he goes to bed at night during a heavy rainstorm. The upgrades will also result in better water quality within Hamilton Harbour.   John Baird, Canada's Transport and Infrastructure Minister and Brad Duguid, Ontario's Minister of Energy and Infrastructure were among those involved in the announcement on Friday morning at the Parks Canada Discovery Centre.

Horwath adds that she feels "very badly for the families and what they must be going through". The Hamilton-Centre MP and provincial NDP leader also insists that our governments must seek job guarantees when providing "targetted investments" to private industry. She stresses that massive corporate tax cuts are clearly not going to protect Ontario's manufacturing sector.
