Tiger-Cats head coach George Cortez has added three assistant coaches to his staff. Veteran coach Jim Daley has been named special teams coordinator, Nelson Martin has been named defensive backs coach and Ryan Sheahan has been named running backs coach. Daley most recently served as special teams coordinator with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2010 after spending the 2009 season with the Edmonton Eskimos as their defensive coordinator and defensive line coach. Martin has served as defensive backs coach with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues as well as a special teams assistant with the Ottawa Renegades.As a player, Martin suited up at safety for seven seasons with the B.C. Lions, earning the West Division's Most Outstanding Canadian award in 1987.Sheahan spent the last four years as an offensive assistant at Queen's University, operating as assistant offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2011.He also served as a guest coach at the B.C. Lions training camp last season.

Hamilton police are looking into a shooting in downtown Hamilton.It happened just after 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon at a highrise on Wellington Street North.Police say a man was shot twice in the leg in an underground parking garage.Investigators say it was not a random attack, adding the victim was targeted.The victim is expected to recover.

The Ontario Fire Marshall is being called in to investigate a suspicious blaze in Hamilton's east end.Fire crews were called to a store on Centennial Parkway just after 2 o'clock this morning.When firefighters arrived, several store alarms were going off.Some cars in the building were also damaged.No one was hurt.

McMaster University researchers have created a device that would spare patients with eye disease from having to get monthly eye injections.Patients would have a tiny rubbery patch inserted into the back of their eyes for six months to a year, to slowly and painlessly release controlled doses of medicine.Study co-author and chemical engineering professor Heather Sheardown says some patients are currently untreatable or are treated with monthly to six-week injections right into the back of the eye.The study was published online in the Journal of Biomaterials Applications.

With just two weeks to go in the campaign, the United Way of Burlington and Greater Hamilton still needs 325-thousand dollars to reach it's goal.CEO Len Lifchus is optimistic the 6.9-million dollar target will be reached before this year's campaign is over.The agency is planning a celebration at the February 17th Hamilton Bulldogs game at Copps Coliseum.An announcement of the tally will be made during the first period as well as a ceremonial passing of the pucks between the outgoing and incoming Burlington and Hamilton campaign chairs.
