Hamilton Politicians Approve Big Box Proposal
Opponents are likely to challenge this one to the Ontario Municipal Board. Hamilton City Council has voted 9-to-7 in favor of the necessary zoning changes, which will allow for a massive retail development in Winona. The plans call for a 440 thousand square foot development, near the QEW and Fifty Road, to be anchored by a WalMart store. Supporters say the city simply can't turn away the new taxes and development charge revenue.   Many also don't believe that opposing the application would survive an O.M.B challenge. Opponents worry about to impact of the big box development on small business in places like Stoney Creek and Grimsby.

Local Students Meet With Prime Minister In Italy
Prime Minister Harper will be meeting with about 200 local students on Friday. The youngsters, who are from Hamilton, Halton and Niagara, are currently in Italy as part of a month-long study and travel experience.  They will recieve high school credits in a variety of areas, including Italian language, hospitality and classical civilization studies. Angelo Di Ianni, Executive Director of the Hamilton Dante Center, says they've been invited to a reception with the Prime Minister following the conclusion of the G8 Summit in the earthquake ravaged city of L'Aquila. Di Ianni adds that local efforts to raise funds for the victims of the earthquake will continue through Festitalia this year.  So far, about 350 thousand dollars has been raised in Hamilton.

Ticats tussle with the Lions
B-C hosts the rumble in the jungle tonight when the Tiger-Cats visit the Lions. Both teams are 0-and-1 after losing their season openers last week. Recently signed linebacker Jamall Johnson will play his first game for the Ticats against his former team. He left the Leo's in December after signing with the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who released Johnson last week. Rookie running back DeAndra Cobb makes his CFL debut tonight. Quinton Porter gets the starting nod at quarterback. He started his first CFL game in B-C last season and was sacked 10 times as the Lions hammered Hamilton 40-10. The pre-game show on Y108 and AM900 CHML begins at 10 o'clock, kickoff is at 10:30. Man from Portugal ID'd in crash
A man killed by a gravel truck in Flamborough on Tuesday has been identified as a 79-year-old man from Portugal. Burlington O-P-P say Jose Moutinho was in the eastbound lanes of Highway 5 when he was hit by the truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police don't yet know why he was on the road.

Gas prices tumble again
With the price of oil down 18 per cent so far this month, you're getting another break at the gas pumps today. Prices are down about 3 cents a litre. It means the average price in Hamilton and GTA is 90.1 cents. The lowest price for regular is in Ottawa at 85.6 cents a litre. The price of oil began this month at just over 73-dollars U-S a barrel. Yesterday, it closed at just over 60-dollars. Stephen Schork, a U-S energy analyst, says the price of oil is falling because "the recession is far from over." OPEC says the global demand for crude has fallen so sharply, it will take four more years before it recovers to 2008 levels.
