Call it extreme makeover: Hamilton edition.
The Carmen's Group, run by the Mercanti family, is upping its investment in the Hamilton Convention Centre.
When the group was given the go ahead to run the facility, it pledged 685-thousand dollars worth of upgrades over five years.
City staff says Carmen's is going to spend much more than that, up to 700 thousand dollars, in just the next few months.
The plans inclue a grander entryway and improved lighting.
Carmen's Group President Peter Mercanti says the improvements are desperately needed because the facility looks tired and that is hampering bookings for weddings.
Councillors on the HECFI board agreed to allow the Carmen’s Group to complete the upgrades before it officially hands over the reins to the convention centre in the spring.
