Parents irate over walkout fiasco
Rick Zamperin
1/11/2013

It has certainly been a frustrating morning for parents, students as well as teachers.

Ontario's public elementary teachers were told to report for work after a planned walkout to protest imposed contracts was ruled illegal early this morning by the Ontario Labour Relations Board.

The move created a mad scramble for many parents who had made alternative child care arrangements for their children.

Some parents have voiced their thoughts on CHML's Facebook page.

Stephanie wrote -- My kids will be there! I'm sure most of the teachers at our school are happy and relieved that they can be in the classroom today.

Stacie wrote -- This is getting nuts.

John writes -- Completely ridiculous.

Marci wrote -- Alot of parents have already made alternative plans for care, and allowed our kids to stay up late. Thanks for the short notice school board!

i worked in health field for many yrs ..Can you imagine if hospitals and nursing homes went out on strike ? It sure would be a horrible situation....Need a no strike clause with teachers....Kids are being used as a pawn and its not fair !!!!!

@judy Yes in fact I am old enough to remember them striking. But it was a rotating one so that there was still service. But it still was found to endanger the public so they were put under the essential services act like police and fire fighters. So why not put teachers in there? COST!!! They would then have to pay more.

Let the kids sleep in. There was not enough time to get them ready as I slept later than normal and was left with not time to get them ready.

What a fiasco - the union and the school board both look like bumbling fools.

My kids have been happily oblivious to most of this up until now - now their really starting to ask questions. Their teachers and the school are losing credibility in their eyes. You can't inspire kids when you go around acting like a bunch of fools and you threaten and jerk them around.

@harry In this case you can't blame the school board , their hands are tied by the power struggle between a power hungry union and a government that lacks balls. The ruling against the illegal strike wasn't brought down until early this morning , what if they hadn't given notice and the teachers did walk out.
This is more of an example of an arrogant union and it's members sayingwe don't give a crap about taxpayers and the kids that they are employed to educate. They are just plain greedy and they are putting their needs ahead of anything else. I think it is time that the government stand their ground and say enough is enough. As a taxpayer I am sick of this B.S. , their wages steadily increase as the quality of education is getting worse. STOP USING THE STUDENTS AND THE PARENTS AS YOUR PAWNS!!

LOL the School phones today looking for my kids. I'm sorry you send home a letter asking me to make arrangments for my kids since you were closing the school so I did. The only reason the teachers showed up today was they didn't want to pay the fine. If you have a contract then honour it till it's up. Maybe that should be something you teach the kids????

@Parent of 2 That is the problem the teachers have, a contract is not a contract when only one side makes it or agrees to it.

I agree that the teachers are essential to our children’s health and education. There is no augment there unless you want to home school them.
So why not put teachers under the essential services act like police and fire fighters.
I will tell you why not, COST!!! They would then have to pay them more.
So our wise government just told the teachers what they could have and not have. That is not a democracy there was no yes or no. Sounds more like something they would do in China or Russia. Less the tanks and guns.

@Crazzy Dave In the fall there was an article on wages comparing teachers salaries against law enforcement and firefighters, on average teachers earn more. How would cost factor in. This whole issue is a power struggle, in what other profession would you be able to act in this manner and be able to dictate how things should be run . In the end taxpayers get screwed and we are the ones that pay the high taxes so these people have a job. Like anyone else in this country , they have a choice, If you don't like it look for another job, or stop whining and do the job that you are under contract to perform.
