Problems with snow clearing in Hamilton, following a minor storm on Boxing Day, were operational and not budget-related.
That from Hamilton's General Manager of Public Works as staff provided the city's public works committee with an explanation for the problems which included missed neighbourhoods and a failure to communicate between the city's call centre and supervisors in the field.
Director of Winter Control Operations Bryan Shynal says steps are being taken to ensure that they don't let the public down again. That includes a review of contractors and the amount and type of equipment available, as well as the co-ordination of snow removal services.
Councillor Tom Jackson wishes these discussions had taken place before the winter season arrived, noting that residents pay good money for such "basic services".
Councillor Terry Whitehead adds that he ultimately wants to be able to tell his angry residents that the contractors responsible for some of the problems "have been penalized".
