City streets were safer in 2012.
Statistics presented to Hamilton's Police Services Board show 88 hundred total motor vehicle collisions. That's the lowest number for any year since 2005.
The number of deaths resulting from crashes also dropped to 20 last year, from 21 in 2011 and 24 in 2010.
Inspector Dave Calvert calls Hamilton "the large city in Ontario with the safest roads".
He credits a number of police initiatives including high collision intersection enforcement, the long weekend holiday traffic safety program which focuses on impaired, aggressive and distracted driving as well as seatbelt violations, and Operation Lookout which encourages motorists to report problem drivers to 911.
