We've been lucky so far this winter, but you never know when the next major snow or ice storm is just around the corner.
The Electrical Safety Authority says homeowners and businesses should be thinking ahead.
Spokesman Steve Smith says power outages, downed power lines and even flooding are things we should all be prepared for.
Smith says it is also a good idea to keep an emergency kit at home in case of a power outage, complete with flashlights, batteries, candles and a first aid kit.
You should have a similar kit in your vehicle.
