Anglican churches weigh in on casino
Ken Mann
1/30/2013

You can add another voice to the "no" side of the downtown casino debate.

The local Anglican Diocese, which represents 18 churches in Hamilton, is making its feelings known within a letter to Mayor Bratina and the rest of Hamilton City Council.

Dean Peter Wall believes that "with so many good community development things happening downtown, we believe locating a casino here will be a significant setback for our city".

The diocese also thinks such a development would run against the city's mission statement to be "a healthy, safe and prosperous community".

It points to research done by the Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction which concludes that the city's low income households are "likely to bear significant social, economic and other costs".
