Councillor calls for Public Accountability Office
CHML
1/31/2013

Just a handful of days after the firing of 29 City of Hamilton Public Works employees -- there's a call to establish a Public Accountability Office.

Ward 4 Councillor Sam Merulla says he will present a notice of motion next Wednesday to create such an office, in order to ensure taxpayers are getting the most bang for their buck.

He tells CHML's Matt Holmes the idea is to seek out efficiencies and assess staff productivity across all city departments -- including contractors.

Merulla wants to use existing staff to run the office on a full time basis.

He envisions a complaints hotline, where information would be gathered, centralized and more formalized.

Merulla says public complaints about city workers are investigated now, but admits the process is somewhat fragmented.

Where are Managers and Supervisors in all of this? Why the need for Public Accoountability in all of this ? Why were they not doing their job ? What action is being taken against them ?
Why did they have to be monitoring a new programme to find this out? It has been going on for years ... the public knew it why not the employer ?
Didn't anyone know the work wasn't getting done? I keep hearing that city employees want to work ... but either therre is nothing to do or management won't let them do things the employees see need done.Management are the ones that need the monitoring and a through investigation into their performance.

Here we go again, any opportunity to be seen and heard for Merulla. Just what we need another level of bureaucracy.

Sam I was wondering when you would open your mouth. Why has ther been no accountability until now? I think the issue here is alot bigger than anyone realizes, the blame goes as far as our elected politicians at city hall. It's no big secret that there is major waste of taxpayer money when it comes to city operated departments, from use of city vehicles to deployment of work crews for work that could be done with far less people than they deploy in a lot less time.
Sam , you and the other aldermen are elected by constituents to oversee the city and the way it is run, this happened on your watch , you are to be held accountable for that . Too late to play stupid , these practices are nothing new, so stop wasting taxpayer dollars trying to make yourself look good while trying to deflect blame. This is money that could go to better use like putting the asphalt where it really belongs , in the crappy roads in Hamilton.
