Casino proponents address council while opponents fill seats

There was a full house at City Hall on Wednesday afternoon, as P-J Mercanti officially presented the Rockhammer downtown casino proposal to Hamilton politicians.

Plans for Rockhammer's 200 million dollar entertainment complex, including a Hard Rock Casino, were first unveiled on Monday during an invitation-only media event in Hess Village.

Mercanti, and others behind the vision, have said that it would employ 12 hundred people and return 10 million dollars to the city in gaming revenues and taxes.

Under questioning for a couple of hours, Mercanti stressed that the "maximum investment opportunity is achieved" when locating a casino downtown, but under questioning from Councillor Sam Merulla said his consortium would consider being part of a Flamborough bid if that location was directed by the O-L-G and the City of Hamilton.

The standing room only audience was made up almost exclusively of residents opposed to a downtown casino.

Of course the people were present for NO to a Casino as they don't work! I am sure if we were not working today there would be many for a YES!

It is not justified to say people who were there to say NO they dont work. There could be many factors that they were able to attend. May be they care more then those who would say yes. May be they are like me, I , was home, but I decided when these city counselors get in that I would not continue to waste any time on them and for what they propose. You want it to know why? It is because I have already 32 yrs. of experience with these city counselors and it is always the same. They get us there for them self's not for to consider us. It is so that they can demonstrate that the public was involved and had a chance but did not care to do so. I am not judgmental.
