Local music scene bands together to oppose downtown casino
Ken Mann
2/7/2013

The opposition to a downtown Hamilton casino continues to pour in.

A group of 79 local musicians, club owners and promoters have released a statement outlining their concerns.

It states that a large entertainment complex, such as the proposal being pushed by Carmens and the Hard Rock Group, could potentially harm local, independent music venues and promoters.

The statement adds that "the current revival of our wonderful downtown is due in part of a growing number of small local businesses and a strong, vibrant arts community".

Max Kerman of the Arkells, Jeremy Fisher, Young Empires and Monster Truck are among those who've signed the statement, along with local venues like The Casbah and This Ain't Hollywood.

Does it not occur to these people that the complex could provide employment for local musicians? Also, maybe all businesses in the city could just oppose another business that could provide competition to them. This is nuts.
How has Target ever been allowed to open here? People, take off the blinders.

As a Hamilton musician of some 40 odd years, and having played with various bands pretty much every past and present bar and venue in Hamilton including for our beloved Tiger Cats at Ivor Wynne and The Sheridan Grand Ballroom for the 1996 Grey Cup Party for TSN, I can't see how these musicians don't want a casino. I for one, would love to play in a Hardrock Venue in my home town. The potential for the Junos, concerts that always need local opening acts, local venues to have the falllout after a larger concert like that happens at Copps and many other bonuses. People need to start looking at the POSITIVE side of things. Have all the bars at Hess Village that have live music put each other out of business? Does Copps put Hamilton Place out of wack? No they work with each other to build up the entertainment of the city.Come on guys, another pro venue to play at? What a wonderful idea.

I'm guessing that these musicians will be on the no hire list, they must be doing well financially to turn down or boycott these good paying gigs

Wanna be hippies. Might as well shut down Copps, convention centre and Art Gallery while we are at it, these large venues take up valuable space for small businesses to open up! Give me a break !! Like previously posted you must like living in squaller low income conditions. I for one love paying one of the highest property tax in Ontario YAY for getting rid of big business opportunities. (Hint of sarcasm)
