Mac & librarian named in lawsuit
Hamilton Spectator

McMaster University and one of its librarians are being sued for 3.5-million dollars for a blog posted three years ago.

Associate Librarian Dale Askey wrote on his personal blog that Mellen Press was accepting second class authors and urging "university libraries not to buy the titles because they are of poor quality and poor scholarship."

Mellen Press alleges in their claim that the company's reputation has been greatly injured and has been the victim of a malicious attack by Askey and McMaster.

McMaster issued a statement saying the basic issue is freedom of speech.

Askey's blog gets about 50 hits a day.

A statement of claim contains allegations that have not yet been proven in court.

Well, once again, it just goes to show that you should think twice about how something you write personally and post in a pubic place will affect you and your worklife. There are better ways to make a statement such as that than in a public forum.

Hopefully Mr. Askey will take a more professional approach in the future. In the meantime, I'm sure his blog has seen more than 50 hits today.
