While Hamilton had two more homicides last year, compared to 2011, overall the rate of violent crime in the city is down.
In fact, the Hamilton Crime Stats report shows, overall, violent crime is down about 8 per cent year to year.
And that's despite an increase in homicides.
There were seven homicides last year, two more than in 2011 and all but one resulted in charges.
Hamilton Police Chief Glen DeCaire says the stats help to put resources where they are needed most.
DeCaire says the decrease in the crime rate will actually help his case for a budget increase saying the investment in policing produces public safety.
An area of concern for DeCaire is violent and sexual crimes against women and children.
He says its important to make sure women and children know they can report crimes and that victim support services are in place for them.
Council is set to deal with the police budget later this week.
