Hamilton's Homicide unit is now in charge of the investigation into Wednesday's fatal fire on Cannon Street.
24 year old Leonel Aguilar was pulled from the burning home early yesterday morning and died later in hospital.
Police are investigating reports that Aguilar had suffered injuries prior to the fire and that a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the house earlier in the week.
Detective Sergeant Paul Hamilton would not comment on the nature of the injuries.
An autopsy is scheduled for today.
Meantime, the City of Hamilton is conducting it's own investigation in the aftermath of this fire.
Municipal Law Enforcement Manager Glyn Wide says its possible this house was an illegal lodging home.
A complaint was made to the city late last year.
The man who died was one of at least eight people renting a room in the house.
Fire officials have not determined whether the home had working smoke detectors.
